Pemerintah Malaysia serta Singapura setuju untuk tunda proyek kereta cepat yang menghubungkan Kuala Lumpur-Singapura selama dua tahun, menurut laporan Channel NewsAsia pada hari Senin (3/9/2018).
Merilis The Straits Times, project rel kereta api selama 350 km ini ditangguhkan sampai 31 Mei 2020. Menteri Perekonomian Malaysia Azmin Ali menyampaikan, tidak ada denda yang dipakai, serta perincian berkaitan hal tersebut akan dibikin pada kesepakatan baru yang selekasnya di tandatangani.
“Kami ingin meneruskan project kereta cepat ini karena akan membawa kebaikan buat ke-2 negara,” tuturnya. “Akan tetapi, saat penundaan, kami akan mengulas bagaimanakah cara untuk kurangi biayanya,” paparnya.
Menteri Transportasi Singapura Khaw Boon Wan pada 30 Agustus lantas mengatakan sudah berjumpa dengan Azmin. Laporan dari The Edge membuka, kompromi penundaan itu dikerjakan dengan mengatasnamakan semangat antar-negara tetangga yang baik.

Dengan demikian, Malaysia bisa terlepas dari ganti rugi sejumlah 500 juta ringgit atau Rp 1,7 triliun, jika membatalkan project itu.
Awal mulanya, Perdana Menteri Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad pilih untuk membatalkan project kereta cepat yang diskedulkan tuntas pada 2016 itu. Lalu, pemerintah Malaysia mulai melunakkan sikapnya serta bernegosiasi dengan Singapura untuk tunda project itu.
Pemerintah Malaysia memprediksi project kereta cepat akan menelan cost sampai 110 miliar ringgit atau seputar Rp 395 triliun. Sesaat utang nasional negara itu sampai 1 triliun ringgit atau Rp 3.500 triliun.
Di Parlemen Singapura pada Juli lantas, Khaw mengatakan Singapura sudah menggelontorkan lebih dari 250 juta dollar Singapura atau Rp 2,7 trilun untuk memulai project kereta cepat itu.
Jalan rel kereta cepat akan memotong waktu perjalanan pada Singapura serta Kuala Lumpur jadi 90 menit. Jarak ke-2 tempat itu sekarang memerlukan waktu tempuh empat jam dengan memakai mobil.
